Reliable rumour - no doubt - has it that the relatively chirpy HMI report on Gourock High last year was not unconnected to the culinary skills of Christine Robertson, the headteacher.

The leader of the Inspectorate team received a jar of lemon curd. A jar from the same batch went on to win second prize in Ms Robertson's local county show - against, we believe, strong competition.

The results of the follow-up inspection are awaited with interest: this year the heidie's lemon curd triumphed with a first.
