Dance - Insightful performance

More students were presented for Higher dance practice this year, from more centres spread widely across the country.

There was praise for some candidates' very high technical abilities, "thoughtful and focused performances" and "choreographies that tackled mature and challenging themes with clarity and insight".

In the planning stage of the practical assignment, the assessor's report also noted "evidence of good solid written work". But centres were urged to improve: preparation for the practical assignment; students' understanding of the technical requirements needed for the performance element; and the personal development plan which was "not a personal statement" but a "practical plan" of improvements that candidates needed to make in their technique. They could be improved by using appendices to illustrate and explain a physical development plan.

While the plan needed to be a candidate's own work, teachers could mentor students and were expected to provide guidance, advice and constructive criticism.
