Headteachers have some novel alternative strategies for coping with stress. As one secondary head revealed at last week's conference on school management (page six): "The only reason I'm happy is because I do not know the trouble I'm in."

Primary heads, too, have their little local difficulties, sometimes eased by the odd secondment. One head about to depart was handed a touching note from a pupil that stated: "We think you are a nice man and a nice teacher and we're sorry you are living."
