The TES is publishing readers' open letters to David Blunkett in a regular series:.
The Sex Education Forum believes that all children are entitled to sex education which supports the advice and information they receive at home and prepares them for adult life.
It should form part of the broad framework of personal and social education and provide developmentally appropriate information, development of communication and values clarification which enables children to make responsible decisions.
We ask you to undertake the following measures: * All teachers at initial teacher training level should be prepared and equipped in knowledge and skills to undertake PSE of pupils and the pastoral dimensions of the school curriculum; * Sex and personal relationships education as part of PSE should be part of the national curriculum; * Sex education guidance should be produced by the DFEE and the Welsh Office which clarifies issues of confidentiality and contraceptive advice; * Pastoral care should be expanded.
The Forum looks forward to working with you, your department and your colleagues in the Department of Health.
