Supping with the devil or a new era of partnership? A surprise visitor to the Educational Institute of Scotland's pre-conference dinner was Sam Galbraith, the first time in recent memory a minister has honoured the union by attending.

Galbraith was there to share confidences with union bosses and take soundings from members as they tucked into supper. Informal and injudicious soundings salivated diners at the rear of the hall. The microphones at the top table had been left on.
