Diary - The cent of success

Fundraising is never easy, but most schools manage to reach their targets eventually. After a chocolate sale flopped at a school in North Carolina, it had to resort to a rather more underhand way to generate money to buy some much-needed equipment.

According to US news reports, Rosewood Middle School in North Carolina sold test scores to pupils - a $20 donation bagging pupils two 10-point credits on two tests of their choice. After details of the plan were publicised, district administrators put a stop to it. Principal Susie Shepherd was told to end the fundraiser and give back the money raised. She claimed that extra points on two tests were unlikely to affect final grades, so they did no harm.
