It is not just the unions that have it in for HMI. Ian McDonald, Glasgow's depute director of education, described Messrs Douglas Osler and Co at last week's advisers' conference (page four) as "relic from a primitive age before the telephone, the fax and the database when they had to go around schools checking that there were actually people in the buildings".
