The programme for Scotland's first international film festival for children and young people has been announced. Discovery, on September 4-19, will showcase national and international films for and by young people, with public and school screenings, a film industry symposium, an education forum and workshops.

The festival will be based at Dundee Contemporary Arts and the Macrobert Arts Centre at Stirling university before touring Scotland. The aim is to promote the importance and impact of quality film-making, film availability and film education.

The programme features films from 20 countries, including Russia, Senegal and Venezuela as well as Scotland. There will be the chance to talk to film-makers, actors, editors and producers.

The symposium, entitled "Respect: Young Audiences, New Attitudes", on September 10 at the DCA, features events and speakers who will examine the children's film industry, including content, production and distribution.

The education forum, on "21st-Century Literacies: Creativity and Ambition", on September 17 at the Macrobert, aims to inspire teachers, education policy makers and film industry practitioners. The main speaker will be the internationally acclaimed director and chair of the British Film Institute board Anthony Minghella.
