Don't look back

One catch-phrase emerges with great regularity from the parliamentary inquiries into the exams imbroglio. We conclude this, of course, "with hindsight".

Five separate references were made at one session last week, including "with the benefit of", "with the wisdom of" and the more elaborate "hindsight is a wonderful thing".

A second session produced another three reference but it was left to Alex Neil, the new SNP convener of the enterprise and lifelong learning committee, to trump the lot.

Neil enquired of Henry McLeish, the lifelong learning minister: "With hindsight - was there a lack of foresight?"

Can this be the same Alex Neil who, on behalf of the SNP, famously predicted last century that Scotland would be "free by 2003"?
