What is it?

This is a bank of 10 different task sheets for independent work on particular writing skills. Based on the writing assessment focuses tied to the national curriculum, each sheet addresses one aspect of improving writing.

How can it be used?

The sheets are laid out clearly and saved as PDF documents so they can be printed out, used as posters or laminated and used as reminders to improve writing skills. They are suitable for seven to 14-year-olds. The sheets include tips for organising longer pieces of work, ideas for replacing over-used words with more interesting ones, and coming to a conclusion.

Classroom ideas

Each sheet can be given to a small group to discuss and practice writing a short story. Then they can swap their tasks with another team to practise that one. At the end of the lesson the groups can analyse how each other's stories have been written. You could extend the exercises by setting a longer essay as homework or ask pupils to spot certain types of words in a newspaper or magazine.

Why is it successful?

The task sheets are well laid out, with tips and examples to reinforce understanding.
