Tim Steward, manager of Language Network Scotland, wants many more to speak foreign languages and relates a cautionary story about the near misfortune of Rolls Royce and its plans for its new top-of-the-range motor. Having already produced the Silver Dawn and Silver Spirit, it decided to launch the Silver Mist.

This was before the company was taken over by BMW, which should have ensured a healthy market in Germany. Unfor-tunately "Mist" in German has a different meaning, rather like the motorway or autobahn admonition Gute Fahrt.

Steward helpfully pointed out: "You can just see a German millionaire spending hundreds of thousands of Euros on a car called the Silver Shite."
