Early Years

The tooth fairy is a survivor. There may not be a Santa Claus these days, but there will always be a tooth fairy, writes Ann Treneman. But now I'm going to tell you a secret - or, actually, about a book that has one. Top Secret by Ted Dewan (Scholastic Pounds 9.99) is a story about who, or what, the tooth fairy really is. Among the excellent full-page illustrations lies an adventure story that touches on teamwork, heroism and what it means to be the new kid on the block.

The action takes place at midnight and involves a "secret operation" of the most sensitive kind. This is a nuts-and-bolts kind of tale and rather boyish (the word "Yo!" features heavily). But the plot is fun, the drawings ingenious and the camaraderie catching. This is an excellent way to update the tooth fairy - and a good bedtime book.
