Environment - Woodland's winning ways

Children at Davidson's Mains Primary in Edinburgh have produced a leaflet about the wildlife of Davidson's Mains park and woodland.

The P5 pupils studied their local wildlife for three months last autumn and have now collated some of their findings in a leaflet for the general public.

The project is the outcome of a collaborative teaching project between environmental education specialists Earth Calling and Davidson's Mains, designed to integrate environmental education into Curriculum for Excellence.

As well as being outdoors and learning about local wildlife, children carried out activities relating to maths, technology, science, health, writing and art, among others.

The project received grants from Almond and Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnerships, and leaflets can be obtained from Blackhall Library and the Royal High.

A spokesperson for Davidson's Mains Primary said: "The project was a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate the potential of Curriculum for Excellence."

Earth Calling is a leading provider of hands-on environmental education in the Lothian area. A spokesperson said: "Full of information and fantastic artwork by the children, the public now have a beautiful guide to this forgotten woodland."
