The opening session of the Edinburgh Conference was chaired with his usual aplomb by Ewan Aitken, the city council's man for education (aka, children and families).

When he asked the audience to choose one reform they thought would improve education, Rory Mackenzie, headteacher of Balerno Community High, volunteered: "Abolish private schools."

"Sitting on the fence as usual, Rory," Aitken commented.
