In Vernon Bright and the Magnetic Banana (Puffin pound;3.99), a young inventor's passion has inspired a hilarious tale by Steve Barlow. Vernon, an anorak with "exploded hair" can't stp inventing things, but his life goes pear-shaped when he makes himself magnetic. Barlow's wit sparkles throughout the story, which is a real treat for fluent readers.
