Fewer lecturers register

19th December 1997 at 00:00
The number of FE lecturers registered with the GTC declined to 1,342 last month from 1,406 at the same time last year. Ivor Sutherland, the council's registrar, said the figures were "disconcerting and very disappointing in view of all the hard work put in by the council during the past year".

The GTC wants FE lecturers to be compulsorily registered in the same way as teachers and teacher education staff.

College principals say it should be a matter of choice, a view the previous government supported and which Labour has given no indication of intending to change.
