Fight to include famous figures

US civil rights campaigner Jesse Jackson and dozens of writers and academics have signed a letter to The Times calling for two famous black figures in British history - Mary Seacole and Olaudah Equiano - not to be excluded from the slimmed-down curriculum following reports that they were to be dropped in favour of more mainstream figures.
