Millie Arnold has run the weekly lunch club for the housebound and elderly at Broadway community high school in St Helen's for nearly 30 years. Sadly it will close this summer when the school becomes part of Cowley language college.
When her own children were pupils, Millie, pictured far left, began to encourage local involvement in the school, something which two years ago helped earn Broadway an "excellent" grade one from Ofsted for community education. The lunch club has about a dozen members and for some it's the only time they leave their homes, escorted by Millie in a minibus. She runs the facility with Year 10 students, who play bingo and serve hotpot and apple pie, cooked by Millie. Headteacher Mike Cooper, who nominated Millie for our flowers, champagne and chocolates, says she's a "truly great role model": cheerful, friendly, generous with time and reliable.
