Friday hero

Pam Smart is headteacher of Clay Cross infant school, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire

Since 1993, when she arrived, Pam has worked tirelessly. Under her, the playground has been transformed into an oasis of imaginative play and a policy for "positive play" has been copied by other schools. Inside, there's a "magic room" with multi-sensory "Snoezelen" facilities which other schools and community groups can share. In 1999, due to Pam's "vision, energy and commitment", the school was chosen by Derbyshire to hos a visit from Kosovan refugee families. Her deputy, Isi Martin, nominated Pam for our flowers, champagne and chocolates because today, in a special assembly, everyone will say a big thank you and congratulations - Pam's getting married tomorrow.
