Friday Hero

Katie Layer is a teacher in the learning support department at Hailsham community college, a 1,400-strong comprehensive for 11-18s in East Sussex Katie began her career at Hailsham in the modern languages department but after having a family she became a learning support teacher. Most of her time is spent in that department now because Katie has been disabled by a painful form of arthritis and walking is increasingly difficult. In spite of several operations and constant pain, she has remained a cheerful and positive teacher who gives 100 per cent to her pupils.Janet Russell, head of art, who nominated Katie for our flowers, champagne and chocolates, says: "In all the time I've known her she's never complained. While the rest of us may feel we've got much to grumble about, our problems are small compared with hers. She's a brilliant teacher and friend."
