Friday Hero

Marion Cross has been a cleaner at Leasowe nursery school on the Wirral for 19 years. She retires next week

Over the years Marion has become a much loved and respected member of staff at this 80-strong nursery. A grandmother figure to the children, she encourages them in all their activities and "never complains", says headteacher Mary Mitchell, who nominated Marion for our flowers, champagne and chocolates.

In collecting for her retirement present, the school has had letters and tributes from more than a dozen ex-teaching staff. "She is a modest peson but people remember her for her kindness and support," says Mary Mitchell. Last year the school moved into refurbished premises, and recently won an award for developing the grounds, including a vegetable patch. Mary Mitchell says: "We'll be lost without Marion and her green fingers."
