Richard Howell is a senior teacher at Hope high school in Salford, Manchester, where he is in charge of staff development and is the mentor to trainee teachers. This term he is also leading the English department to cover for a maternity leave and is responsible for nine NQTs Headteacher Alan Hewitt says: "Richard has an excellent way of talking with people - not at them. He makes them feel comfortable and has the kind of wisdom that really helps new teachers."
Mr Howell, who has taught at Hope high for 17 years, was nominated for our flowers, champagne and chocolates by former NQT Christina Maylor, who joined the school last term. She says she had reached a low ebb in a previous school and, being dyslexic, had begun to believe she wouldn't make it. But her new mentor Richard Howell gave his time freely, reassured her and rebuilt her confidence."In July he sprinkled his magic dust and I passed - he is simply tops!"
