Funding for courses

Don't miss the chance to win an Impact Reward from the National Science Learning Centre.

The centre will be running professional development courses for teachers from November 1, and in this first year funding is provided towards the cost of attending these courses, called Impact Rewards.

All you need do is complete a form describing how you plan to have an impact in school after you've completed the course. A typical award is pound;150 per day (pound;100 + pound;50 accommodation) and any teacher from a maintained school can apply.

The money can be used to pay course fees, supply cover, accommodation, equipment, or whatever your school believes will help improve the teaching of science. It will be paid to your school as soon as you have completed the course.

Courses running this term include: "Inspiring science learning through demonstrations", providing secondary science teachers with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with a range of demonstrations across all areas of the subject, helping them inspire pupils with a sense of excitement about science.

"Enriching the teaching of Science" is also aimed at secondary science teachers, enabling them to look at informal learning activities that will broaden pupils' experiences of science. Participants will work alongside research scientists, explore ways of running science clubs, field trips and museum visits, and take part in professional discussions.

"Science for all: teaching science to pupils with special educational needs in mainstream schools", "Labs for learning: support for those going through laboratory refurbishment", and "Inspiring post-16 physics" are among more than 35 courses for primary and secondary teachers.

Apply soon, as courses are filling up and Impact Rewards are rapidly being allocated.
