The Gauleiter, the patriarch and the rector
Hidden among rugby photographs and school association minutes was a thinly bound jotter dating from 1970, proudly inscribed "Rector's Ideas". A Filofax of its day, it contained a host of personal reminders to the late Bob Corbett, to see principal teachers about this matter, or depute heads about that.
But it was the first memo on things to do that caught the attention, and only one item remained unticked by the end of a lengthy list. Corbett reminded himself: "Detach self from day-to-day minutiae: adopt role of benevolent patriarch rather than snooping Gauleiter."
