The genius of Dumbledore

28th September 2001 at 01:00
Your columnist Adrian Mourby has missed the point about Professor Dumbledore (Fantasy Teacher, TES, September 14). The professor is a man with an educational philosophy for our times. I refer you, for instance, to page 245 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in which the great headmaster gently chastises Harry for breaking school rules in the course of clearing Hogwarts of the Monster. "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities," he says. This is a quotation that should be pinned to the wall of the Secretary of State, and all those who continue to believe that the measure of education is statistics rather than individuals.
