19th May 2006 at 01:00
More than 9,000 primary pupils in Darlington will be urged to walk, cycle or take the bus to school for the next three weeks as part of a sustainable transport project.

As part of the Medal Motion scheme, they will win gold, silver or bronze medals according to how well they do. Darlington is one of three towns and cities in the UK chosen as a demonstration "sustainable transport town".

The project is backed by pound;3m from the Department for Transport.
