We cannot let the upheaval among the education conveners (page four) pass without remarking on the reincarnation of Malcolm Green, former boss in Glasgow.

Having been associated with education in the city for as long as anyone can remember, Green has been elected chief whip of the ruling Labour group. He has decided, however, in best new Labour style, that he should be known as the "business manager".

As one wag noted: "Malcolm is more interested in guidance than in discipline."
