Ivan Lewis, the adult skills and young people's minister, was on sparkling form the next day when a college principal pointed out the near impossibility of hiring lecturers in specialist subjects because of low pay. "I said during my speech I was going to tell it how it is," said Mr Lewis. "I wasn't expecting to hear it how it is."
