Heads over heels for each other

The standard for Headship has been rechristened the Standard for Wedship in Fife after two aspiring heads fell in love and married after meeting on the course.

Louise Alexander met Iain Yuile two years ago when they embarked on the flexible route to headship programme. She was depute head of Torbain Primary in Kirkcaldy and he was depute head at Inverkeithing High. Their first real encounter was a two-day coaching session when Fife's head of CPD, Claire Gemmell, matched them as partners - she is now known as Cilla Black for her matchmaking prowess.

"We realised we had a lot in common; obviously we liked one another and we emailed a couple of times. I had been a teacher for many years at Dalgety Bay Primary and we used to joke that my former P7s were now his problems in S4," said Mrs Yuile.

They had their first date in June 2007, got engaged in June 2008, and married that December

There was, however, an academic side to their relationship. "Both of us had to spend quite a lot of time on coursework. We really helped one another through it. There was a lot of reading and reflecting involved. I look back on the flexible route as something quite memorable," she added.

The icing on the cake came when they were presented with their certificates at a ceremony in Glasgow in April. Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop noticed they had the same surname and enquired if they were related. When she discovered they were, she insisted on being photographed with the happy couple.
