Hero is still on course

Staff at Bolton community college were this week planning a special event to welcome back Olympic hero Amir Khan.

The 17-year-old lightweight boxer, who brought back a silver medal from the Athens games, is due to return on September 20 to complete his BTec course in sports development and fitness.

But as well as a welcome there was also a warning - because the student admits that he has fallen behind in some of his coursework on account of his pursuit of Olympic glory.

His course tutor, Graham Roberts, said: "He has three or four bits of outstanding assignment work to catch up on, but I suppose he has a decent excuse for missing a deadline.

"He is a hard worker and has been taking work with him to training camps.

We will be working with him to help him to keep on top of his workload."

Alison Bowes, principal of the college, said: "We are really pleased that Amir has done so well and that he is still determined to get a qualification to help him in the future.

"Well done, Amir, from all the staff and students and enjoy your well-deserved success, but make sure you're not late for your first class in two weeks' time."
