Am Baile for Schools - a pioneering pound;35,000 interactive publishing initiative for pupils and teachers - has been launched within Highland Council's website.

The bilingual online initiative will tie in with the authority's year-long cultural festival, Highland 2007. Developed by the council and Historic Scotland, "Am Baile for Schools - Am Baile do sgoiltean" project gives young people the chance to publish text, pictures, video and audio clips about their history projects and share them with others across the world.

Councillor Andrew Anderson, chairman of Highland Council's education, culture and sport committee, said: "Drawing on information supplied by the council's library service, archives, museums, local heritage groups and individuals, this site helps pupils develop their research and IT skills and explore methods of publishing multi-media materials online."

Content is controlled by teachers and will only appear once approved. It also includes a database which can help teachers locate national and local resources linked to the national curriculum and can be used to support classroom learning. These range from pre-history, the clearances and emigration, to the Jacobites, the Second World War, and famous Highland personalities, such as Hugh Miller, right, a collector of Scottish folklore.
