For students of history in British schools, there can only be one option in terms of a study of sugar, and that is the connection between sugar and the British Empire, especially when you throw in that other British addiction, tea. Students at KS23 could look at the connection between sugar and slavery. Students could be asked to create their own diagrams and or displays on the links between sugar, slavery, tea and empire. They could also be encouraged to visit their local archives to see whether their local area had a connection with the sugar trade, or whether someone in their locality had a connection with it. The story may well be the ideal antidote to the sweetness of sugar.
