The last report by HMI in its "effective secondary schools" series has a familiar message for technical education - progression from P7 to S1 needs to improve and schools must do more to challenge all their pupils.

The report praises well organised departments and well planned lessons. But it calls for more careful course selection, taking account of pupil needs, staff expertise and departmental resources.
