New Egyptian galleries at the Ashmolean

What's its claim to fame?

The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford is home to some of the finest ancient Egyptian and Nubian collections in the country, with predynastic and protodynastic material that ranks among the most significant in the world. They are now sharing their resources on the TES website.

So what's new?

On 26 November the Ashmolean opened its new #163;5 million Ancient Egypt and Nubia galleries. This second phase of major redevelopment redisplays Egyptian collections and exhibit objects that have been in storage for decades - more than doubling the number of mummies and coffins on display. The new galleries will cover more than 5,000 years of human occupation of the Nile Valley.

What they say

"These remarkable collections are among the most important outside Egypt and one of the Ashmolean's most popular attractions," said Professor Andrew Hamilton, vice-chancellor of Oxford University.

"This significant redevelopment will transform both the opportunities for using the collections for teaching and research at all levels, and the way they are enjoyed, cared for and integrated within the wider museum, well into the future."

Anything else?

The museum has a range of opportunities for educational visits and resources. To learn more, go to www.ashmolean.orgeducation or visit their profile on TES Resources.
