Huntley references were not checked

The school that hired Ian Huntley as a caretaker months before he murdered Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells admitted that it did not check his references. Howard Gilbert, principal of Soham village college, told the Bichard inquiry that he had accepted Huntley's references at face value.

The inquiry will hear evidence from teaching unions next week.
