Your article on teacher harassment ("Draw the line", Magazine September 11) and story of Judi Barber (Comment, September 11) serve to show that teachers are inadequately protected from malicious, devious and misleading allegations from pupils.
Such lack of protection is in breach of UN Human Rights law and employers' duty of care legislation, and the potential to wreck the lives, careers and health of teachers could not be any greater. Perhaps teachers who have suffered the consequences of malicious or false allegations could pursue legal action to obtain substantial compensation. If they settled for compensation of at least three or four times their annual salary with pension contributions for the number of years the allegation remains on their CRB record, those funding education would have a major crisis on their hands and legislation to protect teachers fully might follow rapidly.
Schools must be safe places for teachers.
