The keys to Kelmscott and other William Morris houses

o Kelmscott Manor is open to pre-booked groups of visitors on Thursdays and Fridays from April 1 to September 30. Admission costs Pounds 2.50 for students and Pounds 5 for adults. The nearest towns are Wantage and Faringdon. Teachers can make a preliminary visit and are advised to talk about their requirements with the custodians in advance.

o Other buildings which have strong associations with Morris can be visited, though all limit their visiting days.

o Kelmscott House, 26 Upper Mall, Hammersmith, London W6, was Morris's home 1878-96 and in the last five of these years contained the offices of the Kelmscott Press. It now houses the offices of the William Morris Society. The basement and coach house are open on Thursdays 2-5pm.

o The Red House, Red House Lane, Bexleyheath, Kent, was Morris's home and is an early Philip Webb house regarded as an architectural gem. Contains Morris fixtures and fittings. It is lived in by Mr and Mrs Hollamby and can be visited at weekends by appointment, made only by letter. Recommended for serious students of architecture.

o William Morris Gallery, Lloyd Park, Forest Road, Walthamstow, London E17 4PP. Tel: 081 527 3782, is in the part of London where Morris was born. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-1pm and 2-5pm. Student room, reference library. Admission free. Visits of about an hour recommended.

o Wightwick Manor, Wightwick Bank, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, was built by a founder of the Manders Paints company. It has Morris interiors and a collection of Morris Co products. Open April 30-December 31, pre-booked school parties Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tel: 0902-761108. Custodian: Monty Smith.
