Know your shieldbugs

17th September 2004 at 01:00
Do you know your Acanthosomatidae from your Scutelleridae? Can you distinguish the New Forest shieldbug from its Cornish cousin? The Guide to Shieldbugs of the British Isles is a compact laminated chart, packed with pictures and information about 45 species of these minibeasts.

Named for the shield-like plates on their backs, they exhibit remarkable variety: some feed on insects, others on forget-me-nots or juniper cones.

The guide will encourage students on field trips to use their eyes and to understand the relationship between biology and habitat. pound;3.50 (inc pp) from Field Studies Council Publications, Preston Montford, Shrewsbury SY4 1HW.
