From left field

25th October 1996 at 01:00
With reference to Stephen Bates's account of my remarks on some members of the National Union of Teachers, Carborundum (TES, October 11) misquotes me. My operation was directed not against "the left", which would have been a self-inflicted wound, but against the Trots (the ultra-left), as Stephen Bates makes perfectly clear. A commentator on politics who doesn't know the difference between left and ultra-left should be doing another job.
