Legal aid for tutors
Once again Keith Abbott has produced a comprehensive course text. Of particular use to GNVQ tutors are the guides to covering the BTEC and RSA performance criteria. These not only list the criteria but also cross-reference them to the tasks and group activities in the text. Abbott also links assignments and activities to the evidence indicators cited in the module specifications.
The thorough subject coverage and explanation of technical terms in plain language make this an ideal student text. Readers are taken through each section methodically with regular tasks and activities to assist deeper understanding of the key concepts involved.
The practical nature of GNVQ courses is reflected by examples of the documentation met in the legal world. Tasks are arranged around these pro forma and their completion has to be helpful in compiling a broad portfolio covering the wide range of statements prescribed by the awarding bodies.
The assignments concentrate on the production of written reports, which allows numerous opportunities for students to claim competences in this core skill but overlooks other skills. As models for assignment work, however, they more than serve their purpose and can be adapted to incorporate other core skills, such as oral communication and some aspects of information technology. Care has been taken to ensure complete coverage of the current module specifications.
