(Photograph) - Let's hear it for us: snapshots from the Sure Start programme in Seacroft, east Leeds, celebrated in Making a Brew (Heads Together Productions pound;10), a collage of impressions, descriptions and images collected by the Sure Start team and the families they support.
The focus, as with all Sure Start programmes, is on the centres where young children, parents and parents-to-be are given space and safety in which to become confident and independent. The key to success is listening to what people want. When pound;75,000 became available, instead of building yet another vandal-attracting play area, the team listened to parents and spent the money on making the gardens of the houses safe to play in. This extended to a safety equipment scheme for the houses themselves. As a result hospital accident admissions have fallen.
The book's message in National Sure Start Month is one of changed lives and renewed hope. Let parent Penny speak for all: "I hope to be able to move on, forget my past and have a wonderful, happy life with my children."
A congratulatory foreword is signed, "Gordon Brown MP". Let's assume, then, that all is financially set fair for Sure Start.
