Dear Editor

Having received the poster "Firsts", a poem by Zo Gardner, in TES Primary, I decided to use this in the literacy hour as a text for guided reading.

Over four days, each guided reading group studied the rhyme scheme, 'brainstormed' their memories of "firsts" and produced a verse as a contribution to the class poem. As a class group, their aim was to paint a picture from childhood to old age.

On day five, each group read their verse, another verse was added, and then we celebrated our teamwork - resulting, we feel, in a brilliant poem!

TES Primary is without doubt an excellent publication. Keep up the good work. We hope you like ours!

Yours faithfully Sue Wilins, Stokesley school, 5 Springfield, North Yorkshire
