Letters extra: governors appointed by private companies
"Shareholders to take control of failing schools" (TES July 6).
This story say "under proposals put forward by government ... companies which take over failing schools should be given a controlling majority on governing bodies."
Surely this cannot be right as operating public services in the interests of the consumers, not the suppliers, is one of the declared principles of the government in its policy for improving the services? To give a majority on the governing bodies to the supplier would clearly be contrary to these principles. People will not want to be appointed knowing they were required to act as stooges.
