Local bout of mergeritis

15th October 2004 at 01:00
Iain Mackinnon (FE letters, October 8) seems to be a very sensitive governor of a further education college. He is, no doubt, as he says, trying to act for the good of local communities.

He signs himself governor, Ealing, Hammersmith and West London college.

A local community stretching from Southall, on the far western edge of London, to a site in Baron's Court near Paddington station. Ealing, Hammersmith and West London is the result of the mergeritis that has beset FE, especially since incorporation, and which has made colleges as "local" as a branch of MacDonald's.

The last gulp for Mr Mackinnon's college was Ealing Tertiary College. ETC.

Known affectionately but accurately to staff as Everywhere Total Chaos.

Hammersmith and West London took over ETC sites when the then Further Education Funding Council shut it.

The cause given by the FEFC was over-concentration on a failed merger with East Berks college.

Mergeritis.
