A classics project has received pound;50,000 to introduce Latin to 20 inner city schools in the capital. The Iris Project received the money to promote the language at Hackney in east London and at Kilburn in north-west London, following a successful pilot of Latin at three schools. The money will be used to fund training programmes and teachers.
It will also provide dictionaries, computers, posters and other materials for the classrooms of every school involved in the programme this coming academic year.
Boris Johnson MP, president of the Joint Association of Classical Teachers, held a reception in the House of Commons in June to launch the expansion of the project.
He will continue to support the project by visiting schools and promoting Latin to the pupils.
