The Confident Child by Terri Apter (W W Norton pound;17.95) has impressed Anna Baldwin, a teacher at Hills Road sixth form college, Cambridge.

"Although it is aimed primarily at parents it is very relevant to teachers because it ives practical help on how to approach a child who is unable to learn what you are teaching because he or she is so unrelaxed.

"I use its strategies with sixth-formers, but they can be applied to all age groups."
