Mad to fall for it

28th January 2000 at 00:00
I AM astounded at the reason so many teachers give for wanting a laptop computer - so that they can work at home! Is this some kind of madness? It's certainly a bargain for the Government, who pay a few hundred pounds and get endless hours of extra unpaid work from its proud owner.

A lot of money is being spent on equipping schools with computer networks to help teachers and pupils work more effectively. It would be btter for teachers to engage with this new technology rather than squirrel away in private with their personal laptops.

If their working conditions are such that teachers can only do a vital part of their job at home, then they should tackle the inadequacies of their workplace and not fall for easy solutions that will only perpetuate them.
