Queen Elizabeth I spent her childhood at The Old Palace of Hatfield in Hertfordshire, and it was here that she heard of her accession to the throne.

Anniversaries being celebrated this year include the 500th anniversary of the palace, 50 years of the Jacobean Hatfield House being open to the public and 20 years since the national collection of model soldiers went on display. School groups are welcome and several celebratory events will be held throughout 1998. For details tel: 01707 262823.
