Its formidable heroine is embroiled in action sequences ranging from mummies to resurrected dinosaurs so it's not surprising that Luc Besson's 2010 film, The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec, has been such a hit - or that it features prominently in this month's National Schools Film Week (13-21 October).

"Foreign language films have become a key component," explains NSFW director Nick Walker of the charity Film Education. "We give young people nationwide the opportunity to see film where it can be best appreciated, but our goal is also to give them experience of films beyond Hollywood blockbuster fare."

The painstaking business of building the audiences for such films has been ongoing throughout NSFW's 16-year life, and around 450,000 young people will participate this year. Mr Walker adds: "Certainly, we would not be getting these numbers if our programme did not dovetail with classroom priorities."
