More pay for classroom assistants

27th October 2006 at 01:00
The status and pay of the classroom assistant could do with a review. Such a role has changed somewhat since it was first introduced.

I spend 90 per cent of my time as a classroom assistant supporting learning, usually small groups, using the skills and experience I gained during my nursery nurse training. Most adminfiling display work is undertaken by clerical staff.

If we want classroom assistants to take on more responsibility for supporting and extending learning, then the qualifications and salary for the post should be raised.
